Members of the military community face significant barriers to finding meaningful, long-term employment. The emergence of COVID-19 has contributed to those barriers greatly—with veteran unemployment rising to 11.8 percent in April 2020*.
To understand the implications of these barriers on military community employment, the SHRM Foundation, with support from USAA, conducted research to understand the challenges employers face as they seek to attract and retain transitioning service members and veterans, as well as the tools and resources HR professionals say they need in order to strengthen their military community inclusion initiatives.
This research report, Unlocking the Potential of the Veteran Workforce: A Renewed Call to Action Amid COVID-19, along with its companion presentation, provide a clear business case for the immeasurable value of hiring and training this highly skilled group of workers. Professionals and advocates alike can utilize these resources to effectively communicate this business case within their workforce.
